Arts in Education

The Garrett County Arts Council promotes arts enrichment activities for Garrett County students.

Each year, the Arts Council allocates more than $3,000 in grant funding for special performances and workshops by Maryland artists in local schools. We provide additional grant funding to support the annual Student Arts Fair presented by the Garrett County Board of Education, as well as the Re-think Recycling Sculpture Contest that is coordinated by the Garrett County Solid Waste Management Service.

In recent years, the Arts Council has presented three student art exhibits at our retail venue, The Gallery Shop, in Oakland—an elementary school exhibit, middle/high school exhibit, and a Re-think Recycling exhibit.

For many years, we have honored two graduating high school seniors each year with an award to recognize their talent in the visual arts. In 2016, this program expanded to recognize four senior students at each high school; the individual award categories are for excellence in band, chorus, theater, and the visual arts.
